Argumentative essay may be defined as the essay containing a stronger claim over the essay topic. Under argumentative essay, the writer tries to convince the readers with its facts regarding the topic providing arguments and evidence. On the other hand, research essay is an essay written on any topic or problem comparing the previous research with the current one. Under the research essay, a clear understanding of the thesis is provided to help the reader in knowing what the essay is all about. Both argumentative and research essays are written differently on the basis of considering different elements. Following are some different ways of writing argumentative and research essays:

Under an argumentative essay, an arguable topic is selected, which has both supporting and opposing arguments. The topic should include different issues for better arguments. On the other hand, a research essay does not have any argument. It generally discusses about and the topic and elements are presented to support the writer’s view.

At the same time, under the argumentative essay, the topic is explained with some background information. The position of the writer is also presented asserting a particular side. The essay begins with taking a particular side whether in favor or against of the central theme of the essay whereas in a research essay, the essay is described with a formal background including the view of early research on that particular topic. It does not include any argument or consideration of one side over the other.

The research essay just deals with the facts and figures to support the theme of the essay, but on the other hand, in an argumentative essay, both sides of the essay are presented with proper evidence. An argumentative essay includes counter-side of the issue to present strong argument over the topic. It provides a mix of evidence to support and to reject the issue. In a research essay, generally the examples of previous research conducted on that particular topic are presented as evidence, but the argumentative essay presents examples from any field. Argumentative essay is written with an objective to provide readers a valid reason over your position making the readers to choose the position or to disagree with the position.

On the other hand, the main objective of the research essay is to bring the in-sight of the problem and situation to readers. Another major difference between their writing is that the format of the research essay is simple whereas the argumentative essay follows a different and specific format to accomplish the essay. It includes many things other than the research essay. An argumentative essay ends with responses like refutation, answers to objection; whereas the research essay ends with concluding the overall discussion.
